Did you know that Buddhism applies to your everyday life? It is not a religion just for monks in monastaries. It is a life philosophy for real people with real life challenges.

Soka Gakkai International (SGI-USA) is an American Lay Buddhist Association that promotes World Peace and individual happiness based on the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism.

Our members reflect a cross section of Society representing all walks of life.

Buddhism is about achieving personal happiness in your daily life. The path to happiness begins with the first step.

Our Buddhist Heritage

Twenty-five hundred years ago in India, Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, awakened to life's supreame truth and expounded the path to enlightment, or Buddhahood. He taught that all people have the capacity to attain this state. a principle crystalized in his highest teaching, the Lotus Sutra. In the 13th century, Nichiren Daishonin, a Buddhist reformer in Japan, further clarifired this core teaching of the Lotus Sutra and established a path to enlightment accessible to all people.

The Practice for All People

Nicherin identified the Law that permeates all life and the universe as Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. He taught the practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with confidence in the Buddha mature inate in all life as the way to dispel delusion and bring forth inherent strength, wisdom and compassion. Through chanting, studying Buddhism and takeing action for the well being of others, we establish the state of Buddhahood as the predominant condition in our lives, bringing joy and meaning to each moment while creating peace in our families and communities.

The Soka Gakkai International Heritage

Tsunesaburo Makiguchi searched for a humane system of education. As he tried to reform the Japanese education system,he encountered Nichiren Buddhism and subsequently founded the Soka Gakkai in 1930. During World War II, Mr Makiguchi and his disciple, Josei Toda, were imprisoned for their refusal to compromise their religeous beliefs in face of pressure from Japan's militarist government. Mr. Makiguchi died in prison at 73. Upon his release near the end of the war, Mr. Toda began to rebuild the organization and, with thr support of his young desciple, Daisaku Ikeda, led it to achieve remarkable growth. Two years after Mr. Toda's deathe in April 1958, Daisuku Ikeda became the third president. Under him his leadership, the SGI has spread into 192 countries and territories and is practiced by more than 12 million people.
